Nikki Glaser kicked off her two-night performance at the Kalamazoo State Theatre with her best friend and opener, Anya Marina, singing Taylor Swift songs. Her line of thought may have been that this night was only the beginning of a fantastic time with an enthusiastic crowd in Kalamazoo. Taking to the stage, she said hello to all who had come to witness her show. When Nikki Glaser stepped onto the stage on January 19th, she wasted no time in making the audience laugh. She jokingly commented on being in Kalamazoo and then made a joke about the city’s Christmas lights. Her quip? That Kalamazoo must be pretty depressing with such lackluster holiday decorations. “Wait, why?” Nikki may have been wondering. After all, she noted that Kalamazoo still had their Christmas lights up, jokingly saying “You must be really sad if you need to keep your Christmas lights up this late into the year”. But she obviously wasn’t aware of the tribulations that Michiganders face during this time of year. It’s cold, snowy and dark outside. And with the sun going into hibernation until April, sometimes a little extra twinkle is what we need to get us through and keep our spirits high. During her set, Nikki reminisced about a previous visit to the theatre in 2010 – but unfortunately had no recollection of it as it was before she quit drinking. Perhaps what she needs is a tour of what makes Kalamazoo so special – something Nikki hasn’t experienced yet. Even better: if you do go to see her second night at KST, she offers a great mocktail option, and for this we were appreciative of having a queen who doesn’t drink!
