Ahead of Travis Kelce’s appearance in the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs three years ago, Cleveland Heights residents wanted to commemorate the occasion in a special way. A group of friends, including Dawn and Alex Quintana and Joe D’Amato, came up with an idea to celebrate both Travis and his brother Jason – one on each team – by unifying the city with bug lights in their school colors: yellow.
The Quintanas quickly ordered a thousand bulbs from a company out of Dallas, but finding them locally proved to be difficult as Home Depot only had a handful in stock. Alex reached out to seven local businesses – all either Heights graduates or friends of the Kelce family – that agreed to distribute the bulbs for free when they come in next Monday. This includes The Wine Spot, Washington & lee Service, The Tavern Company, The Social Room, Parnell’s Pub, Luna Bakery Cafe and The Grog Shop/B Side.
Kathy Blackman – mother of two Heights students and owner of The Grog Shop/B Side – was an immediate yes to the offer. She praised the Kelce brothers for their unwavering support of their alma mater and expressed her excitement at being able to give back something small to them.
Alex encourages those who are unable to get hold of a yellow bulb or perhaps want to show support for Philly (green) or Kansas City (red) too to find any spare lightbulb they have lying around or else use their Christmas lights in Cleveland Heights for color if needed; anything that will make Cleveland Heights “shine” so it can be seen from space!
