The spacing criterion, also known as the luminance uniformity criteria, is an important factor in lighting design. It is used to determine the required luminance levels and distribution pattern of a light source for both functional and aesthetic purposes. Put simply, it sets out how far apart two lamps should be placed in order to achieve optimal illumination.
