Mercury is a chemical element used in the manufacture of fluorescent and high intensity discharge (HID) light bulbs. This element is heated to create an arc of light, which produces high levels of illumination. When lamp mercury reaches its boiling point, it emits ultraviolet radiation which can be hazardous if proper safety practices are not followed. As such, mercury should always be handled with caution.
