Christmas Lights Ignite Deadly Virginia House Fire

Fairfax Virginia Christmas Tree Lights Fire

Fire investigators have determined that an 86-year-old woman, Crista Mensh, who died in a house fire after Christmas was caused by lights on a live Christmas tree. The blaze broke out at 7pm on December 26th in the 3500 block of Goodview Court in Fairfax, Virginia and caused $615,275 in damage to the home. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Christmas tree fires have decreased over the last two decades but an estimated 160 occur each year of which about one third are electrical. To avoid similar disasters, buyers should water their live tree stand daily and check lights for worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
